Fresh Peach and Nectarine Jello Ice Cream {Memories from the wonder years}

I have so many fond memories growing up of this amazing raspberry ice cream that my Grandma Harris used to make for us at family parties. I have always loved it! There is nothing like having a barbecue with your loved ones and topping it off with some homemade fresh churned ice cream that someone made right before your eyes! I even got to turn the handle that spun the ice cream! This is just one of the incredible experiences I enjoyed at my Grandma's house. She had the most amazing property right in the
East Millcreek gully. There was a creek that ran right through her property. She had this wondrous yard covered in huge mature trees. There were always fresh raspberries to pick (or sneak) apple trees with lovely ripe apples ready for the picking, and a darling playhouse swing set and seesaw. I call this kid heaven. There was nowhere else quite like it. It looks a lot like my dream property. Oh, did I forget to mention that I spent most my summer days swimming in the pool? Ya, well that happened. I miss that place terribly! Who can keep up a place like that forever?..... I just wish I could have bought it when they were selling. That was a sad day. I am so glad I have been lucky enough to have my grandparents so close to me in my life. I have learned so much from them. My Grandma Harris is definitely one of my idols. I only hope I can find a way to be as unbelievable of a mother and grandmother as she has always been. To this day she is as fit as a fiddle, so motivated and accomplishes so much. She is such a great cook too. Who could ever live up to that? Well friends, I plan to try. I may not succeed, but I can say that I can make a mean Jello Ice Cream like Grandma, and that's not nothing! Ha Ha.

My grandma always makes this with raspberries but I am sad to say that my dear husband *thinks* he hates them. I refuse to accept this. I thought I would make some peach and nectarine ice cream instead. I do love him ya know. It turned out so so good. I don't think I have ever eaten fresh peach and nectarine ice cream. Folks, its a keeper. I will definitely make this again. My daughter and I had such a riot making it! I can't believe I don't do this more often! I searched high and low for the old school brand of ice and salt ice cream churners, you know the old wooden barrel style ones, but I had no luck. I decided to re-work and change the recipe a little to suit my Cuisinart electric ice cream maker. I knew I had the bowl in the freezer for a reason! The Cuisinart only makes 2 quarts rather than the whopping 6 quarts that my grandma would make. Good thing, because I might have eaten 6 quarts of ice cream last night and you would have had to haul me off to the hospital in a stretcher! Ice cream was made. We ate, we loved, we conquered. It was a good night. :) So, make some memories with your loved ones, and churn up some fresh fruit jello ice cream. You don't have to live in a dream estate to do this, and you won't regret it. Eating ice cream is never a mistake! Lol.

I love that this recipe essentially only has 5 ingredients. It is so easy. It tastes amazing. I think its kinds funny and genius that it has jello in it! Who knew jello was so versatile? It really boosts the flavor but the star is still the fresh fruit! The flavor combinations are endless with this recipe, so get creative and make whatever flavor suits your fancy!

Really all you have to do is peel and mash up your fruit of choice. Pretty huh? I just love summer fruit! Especially nectarines and peaches. "Millions of peaches, peaches for me..." Anyone else remember that song? Ha ha. Then Stir together all remaining ingredients! Mix them all in a big bowl and combine them well!

I sure am lucky to have such a fun cooking companion! She loved helping with the ice cream, and loved eating it even more!

Whoops! Naughty helper! OK.... I did the finger dip too. I couldn't help it!!

When everything is mixed well place your bowl (covered with plastic wrap) in the freezer for 30 minutes. This helps the ice cream freeze much faster in the ice cream maker. Totally worth the time. Then when it's all nice and cold, pour the mixture in the frozen ice cream canister and click your Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker to the on position! It should take somewhere from 30-40 minutes to get to a good consistency. When this is complete, I transfer the ice cream to a freezer container with a lit and let it harden in the freezer for at least an hour (If you want a really firm consistency) If not, serve right away! It's good both ways. Voila! Home made deliciousness! Have fun friends! I know we did. :)

Man this was nummy. Good this we have leftovers! I think it's a dessert after lunch kinda day! I have to say, the texture of this ice cream was wonderful! It was so silky and creamy. My husband and I were shocked really, because it was so simple to make. 5 ingredients people! That's all it takes. Woo-hoo for easy yummy treats!

  1. Looking at the quantities in the recipe as written, I can't see how it would make 2 quarts and I would love to try it. Did this have any additional milk or other liquid? Or did you whip the cream beforehand?

  2. Karen,

    My ice cream machine has a 2 quart bowl and it was full when the ice cream was finished. The liquid content when you start the freezing process is about a cup and a half short of two quarts, but it expands when it freezes and fills the 2 quart bowl pretty well to the top. If it had been much fuller it wouldve overflowed when it was being stirred during the spinning/freezing process. If you are making this in a large 6 quart old-fashioned ice cream barrel then I would triple the recipe and add extra heavy cream to level. It wouldn't hurt to have a little extra cream. :) Let me know if you end up trying it! I absolutely loved the texture. I think it is really important to let it set in the freezer a while after churning to make it to the more firm texture. I loved it that way. :) Another thought.... My peach and nectarine were quite large, and amounted to about 2 cups total of fruit. So if you are using smaller peaches or nectarines, or a different type of fruit I would keep that in mind. :) Good luck!
